INTERVIEW

Q: How did you get started in bodybuilding?

GH: For as long as I can remember Ive always been into lifting weights and training. As a kid i dreamed of looking like the action figures I played with daily. My first exposure to bodybuilding was through the WBF because i used to watch wrestling. When I opened my first muscle and fitness magazine and saw coverage from the 1997 Olympia in Long Beach it blew my mind. Seeing guys like shawn ray, kevin levrone, and dorian yates took what I saw in the WBF to a whole new level. I was completely enthralled from that moment on.

Q: What do you like about it?

GH: I love everything about the sport. The fact that there are only a few select people in the world who have the discipline and dedication to put in numerous years of hard work day in day out. I love the fact that most of the hard work goes unnoticed, but come showtime your hard work or lack there of will come to light. This game has taught me humility and many more things that have helped me in all phases of my life and Im so grateful for it.

Q: So what are your bodybuilding goals?

GH: To become an ifbb pro and live my life as a professional bodybuilder. I want to compete on the mr. olympia stage and here my name mentioned with all the great bodybuilders in history.

Q:What are you focusing on for competition this year?

GH: After winning the overall at the orange county this year I decided to compete on the national level. I really didnt think i was ready but the win gave me a lot of confidence and a lot of people have been urging me on telling me I belong on the national stage. Me being my own toughest critic of course had doubted that but now i know i belong. I want to nail my conditioning and use my shape and symmetry to my advantage. There arent a lot of complete bodybuilders from front to back and top to bottom so I know if I can dry out enough Ill really stand out.

Q: How do you earn a living now?

GH: I own a nutrition store here in west covina, california currently called nutrition zone but the name will change soon (stay tuned). I run my store 6-7 days a week.

Q: What have you learned from bodybuilding?

GH: Bodybuilding has taught me patience. This game will break you down and test your heart and your guile. I've gotten my ass whooped at plenty of shows. As hard as I work, I know I'm going to succeed at this. Most of all Ive learned about persistance and hard work.
Q: Who have been your biggest influences?

GH: My biggest influences in life have been my mom and dad who both taught to me to always take pride in my work and never to take shortcuts. In bodybuilding ive had many influences throughout the years. Two of the biggest have to be chris cook and kelly bautista. I met chris when he was guestposing at the npc southern cal in june of 2003, he took me under his wing and mentored me. He told me I had the potential to be great and he believed in me. We worked together for about 3 years and his help was a huge for me. I really looked up to the guy and he was always there to help me out.

I met Kelly last year in '07. We hit it off right off the bat. He's a really genuine guy who recognized my passion for bodybuilding. He shares the same passion himself so it was easy for him to want to help me. While working with him this whole off season I was able to compete at the same show 1 year later 20lbs heavier. Im currently working with kelly now for the usa.

Q: How is your support system?

GH: My parents have been perfect, they've supported me in whatever I wanted to do. They were there to buy my protein powder, get my gym membership and go to all my shows. I cant wait till they see me turn pro. Bodybuilding is the one constant in my life and always will be. My wife and I have been married for 10 months. When we first met, I told her that bodybuilding was the most important thing in my life. She accepted that and ran with it. She changed her lifestyle and lost 20 pounds. She's in the gym 5 or 6 days a week. She even diets with me.

Q: Do you come from a bodybuilding family?

GH: I Have no idea where these genetics comes from. My dad grew up in the south on a farm. His nickname was skin. He weighed 130lbs till he was in his 30's. Nothing in my mom's family either.

But I have a sister in Calgary who got her pro card in figure WNSO show. She's going to be moving here to the states at the end of the year and will start competing in the NPC. She's 30 and her muscle maturity is excellent so she will do well.
